The "Amsterdam" that most guests experience is the downtown area, the semi-hover with Centraal Station at its summit. It compares to the city as it was around 1850. Five noteworthy concentric waterways ring the Binnenstad: Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht and Singelgracht, together shaping the Canal District. Different locale inside the downtown area are the Jordaan, a previous common laborers territory now famous with elitists, and Plantage, a verdant and extensive region with professional flowerbeds and the zoo. The Nassaukade, Stadhouderskade and Mauritskade encompass the downtown area and imprint the area of the previous city canal and strongholds. Nearly everything outside this line was worked after 1870. 

 

The semi-hover is on the south side of the IJ, which is regularly called a waterway however more precisely is an estuary. Going east from Centraal Station, the railroad passes the fake islands of the redeveloped Eastern Docklands. North of the IJ is for the most part lodging, in spite of the fact that a noteworthy dockland redevelopment has begun there as well. 

 

The waterway Amstel streams into the city from the south. Initially, it streamed along the line Rokin-Damrak. The dam in the Amstel, which gives the city its name, was situated under the present Bijenkorf retail establishment close Dam Square. The first settlement was on the correct bank of the Amstel, on the present Warmoesstraat: it is in this manner the most seasoned road in the city.
